My Computer has a virus. That being said I am posting from a secure location high up in the Rocky Mountains in a room made of three feet thick steel walls…. or from my roomates bedroom…
Anyways, I wanted to take a look and evaluate the first month of baseball season using some predictions I made as a guide post. I have a friend who says that he doesn’t have his own opinion about sports, and that he only takes things that he hears people saying and passes them off as his own opinions. Now if he had heard me making some of these predictions before the baseball season began, then spit them back out in the middle of April, he might have gotten laughed at.
1.) The Detroit Tigers will WIn the World Series
The Tigers started off VERY slow, and were in fact one of the last teams in the Majors to get a win. That being said, they have turned it around and have a record of 14-15. I see that record as going way up and I see no one contesting them for the AL central, so they will make the playoffs. With the off-season additions of Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willisfrom Florida gives them one of the best lineups and (potentially) rotations in the league along with Magglio ordonez, Carlos Guillen and Gary Sheffield. They have a bevy of young studs in Justin Verlander and Jeremy Bonderman and veteran experience from Kenny Rogers. All of that teamed up with the Fiery Jim Leland as Manager yelling his mustache off whenever they start to slip, I STILL say the Tigers Win the World Series.
2.) Two teams from the AL east will make the playoffs.
This seems like a gimme… except there is a catch… I think that Both the Boston Red Sox and the TORONTO BLUE JAYS will make the playoffs, NOT the New York Yankees.
Most of the reasons for this prediction have to do with negatives in the Yankees club house rather that positives in the Blue Jays. I am quite surprised to see Andy Pettite haveing himself a god little start to the year, I thought with all of the Mitchel Report circus events going on he would be distracted, something I thought would carry over to the clubhouse. That said, when one of your top three pitchers, and perhaps highest profile pitcher is a middle releiver, everthing is not going well. As of today I have correctly predicted that there will be turmoil in the Yankeed organization. The New Boss, will want to get his name in the headlines early and offen to show people that he is following in daddys footsteps. That will surely get in the way of the veteran Brian Cashman and new manager Joe Girardi. I am back on the fence as to whether or not two teams from the AL East will make the playoffs, but maintain that the Yankees will NOT.
3.) The Phillies will win the National League, and Johan Santana will not be worth the money the Muts spent on him, and Pedro Martinez will be hurt early and often in the season.
Sorry Jesse, but your Mets overpaid. Not only will the NL East be the best race all season long, but I believe that my Phillies will win, making it well worth all the grey hairs and potential heart attacks. The Phillies are off to their best start in recent memory and end April leading the NL for the first time this century. That coupled with the Mets having the worst collapse in Baseball history (thanks for getting the ‘60 Phils off the hook by the way) they have to be questioning themselves. What’s that you say? Bringing in Johan Santana changed the topic of the questions back to positive ones? Well just wait about another month or so. Santana has looked awfully human in the first month and people said he would be unstopable against the weaker NL offenses. As soon as people start to see that he is not the Cy Young favorite anymore, they will remember last years Mets, and that will be all the Phillies need to take the division and storm into the playoff for the second year in a row. Not only are the Mets overpaid, but Pedro Martinez is old and fragile. You may not believe me, but when my roommate picked up Pedro Martinez during my Fantasy Baseball draft I told him, “you’ll be lucky if he makes it through summer alive.” Now he IS in fact still alive (unfortunatly) but I was correct in predicting that he would get hurt. Don’t get me wrong even I didn’t think he would get hurt in his VERY FIRST GAME, but hey, the more games he misses the better (for me and the phillies that is). I maintain that the Phillies will win the NL and that Johann Santana will be a mediocre Ace and Pedor Martinez is made of glass.
4.)The Texas Rangers will be below .500
duh. (sorry guys)
That’s all for now folks, check back all next week, I’m going to take a look at some of my favorite sports traditions and curses.
